At Alki Bike and Board we hand file and bevel equipment edges. We use the best local wax from One Ball Jay. Our wax is allowed to set 45 minutes to 1 hour before scraping to allow time for the wax to penetrate the p-tex base. After we scrape we buff the base with diagonal strokes (the same direction as downhill travel) to provide the best flow over any snow surface.
This procedure will perform better and last longer than any machine tune and wax that takes one quick pass. All our wax is 100% biodegradable. We realize that hundreds of thousands hit the slopes each year leaving behind the waxes that use PFCs at the top of our watersheds. Perfluorinated compounds are also responsible for respiratory illnesses among ski industry workers. Considering all the other carcinogens that might enter the water system as it flows downhill in the spring we choose to offer the choice of 100% biodegradable. We also feel good about not plugging in huge energy sucking machines to do this work.
